New York — Canada is not our enemy. Canada is our neighbor, ally, and long-standing partner. At a time when relations between the United States and Canada are facing political and economic challenges, American leaders should approach these issues with pragmatism, diplomacy, and a clear understanding of the interests shared by both nations.

President Donald Trump and his administration should view matters concerning Canada through a pragmatic and diplomatic lens. Strong leadership means protecting America’s national interests and sovereignty while also recognizing the importance of cooperation with our closest neighbor.

The United States and Canada share the world’s longest international border, deep economic ties, strong cultural connections, and extensive cooperation in areas ranging from trade and energy to national security and public safety. Differences between governments are natural, but disagreements should not turn a trusted neighbor into an adversary.

America must remain united in protecting its national interests while promoting peace, stability, and mutual respect. Diplomacy can go hand in hand with firm negotiation. There is no need to undermine the longstanding friendship between the United States and Canada in order to defend American interests.

President Trump has an opportunity to demonstrate that strength and diplomacy can work together. A stable, constructive, and respectful relationship between the United States and Canada serves not only the interests of both countries but also the broader stability and prosperity of North America.

Canada is our neighbor—not our enemy. The path forward should therefore be guided by pragmatism, responsible leadership, diplomacy, cooperation, and mutual respect.
